The following is an excerpt from my latest book Dream On It, Unlock Your Dreams Change Your Life …
Shining, gleaming, steaming, flaxen, waxen. It can be cut short, straightened out, tangled, wild, twisted, calm, colored and even lost. Hair is the one part of your body that you can easily and continually change. The same can be said of your thoughts, which is why your hair, to your dreaming mind, is your ability to change and improve your thoughts, ideas, plans and beliefs.
The state of your hair in your dreams reflects the current state of your thoughts. Having long, luxurious hair points to an abundance of ideas or an extended amount of thought you are giving to something or someone. Tangled hair means confusion. Having things stuck in your hair indicates an inability to get something off your mind. Getting a new hairdo is connected to changing your mind. Losing your hair suggests you are out of ideas as to what to do about something or someone or perhaps a lack of belief. But the most common hair dream of all is of getting it cut.
In real life I have long brown hair but lately I keep dreaming that I have cut my hair short and bleached it. I do not think I would ever really do that to my hair so why do I keep having this dream? – Kellie 28
Lauri: Hair represents your thoughts and ideas because, like hair, they sprout from your head. Cutting your hair in a dream is a good indication that there is some idea or mindset that has gone on for too long that you need to cut short. Have you been depressed or angry? I ask because the blonde suggests that you really oughta “lighten up!”
Kellie replies: That is amazing how my dream is completely in step with what is going on in my life. I gave birth to a beautiful baby girl three months ago and have been suffering from Post Partum Depression. I had enough of the dark thoughts and have started seeking out a therapist.
Cutting hair is such a commonly dreamt event because the deep inner mind does not like being stuck in a mindset, even though we allow ourselves to do just that all too often. We hold grudges, we dwell on the past, we close our minds. Thoughts are meant to flow and change. When a negative or unhealthy thought goes on for too long, as in Kellie’s case, the dreaming mind will chop off our locks to let us know, enough already!
The message of hair dreams: Time to closely examine the thoughts that are sprouting from your mind. The style and condition of the hair in your dream is connected to your current thoughts, ideas and beliefs. Are your current thoughts helpful to you or are they harmful? Are they currently enhancing you as a new stylish do would or are they taking away from you and your quality of life like a bad hair day? As a famous crooner known for his hair once said, “When you replace negative thoughts with positive ones, you’ll start having positive results.” – Willy Nelson

I have long red hair I mean to my butt long and I was loosening my hair now dreaming that I wake to my husband cutting it off. This seems to repeat when I remember what I dream or dream at all.
I am well aware that our moods (including Post Partum Depression) can be caused by nutritional deficiencies, or reduced/cured with some healthy eating and sometimes supplements such as L-tyrosine, L-dopa (not the medication , but the velvet bean extract) etc. I wonder if in some cases the dreaming mind knows it doesn't have to do, or cannot be fixed with diet, therefor, nothing dietary comes up in a dream…either that or the dreamer doesn't know that a simple alteration in diet can help. Though, even if the dreamer has no idea about how medications and supplements work in the brain (and their differences, side effects etc) the dreaming mind can tell us these things because the dreaming mind knows what the body needs!
If it needs more omega 3 oils or minerals, it may tell you to eat more shellfish. If it's more protein, your dreaming mind might have you switching from a low protein or complete protein diet to a lean meat eating machine. Or if it's vitamins, your dreaming mind might equate to fruits, vegetables, nuts, seeds etc. However, if the dreamer has NO idea about the powerful food/mood connection, will they still dream about things they are lacking in diet (or getting too much of) to help with their depression, anger issues etc even if it is unknown by the dreamer?
I've also heard that some drugs (even "anti anxiety" and "anti depressant" drugs) can cause nightmares. Would you consider this an outside interference dream or the dreaming mind telling you "This isn't helping! This so-called anti depressant isn't what you need! Wake up and do something else!"-BTW I laughed out loud typing that!
In this case, I think her dreaming mind is letting her know that this is something that might be changed just by expressing it, not exclusively by dietary means. I did ask a similar question before so I'm sorry if I'm repeating myself, but what is your thought on this?
Also, I'm hoping to get another call in to you. I've had two consecutive vampire nightmares…and quite an interesting one about YOU! 🙂 It's one I'd rather keep private…
